Walking route through Alicante city center

Paseo de la Explanada de España en el centro de Alicante

Alicante's city center is compact and easily explored on foot. In just a few hours, you can stroll by the sea, get lost in the old town, and sample the local cuisine. We propose a simple route, designed to be enjoyed hands-free.

Before you set off: leave your luggage

A walking route with hills and narrow streets isn't the best plan with a suitcase. Leave it at a BagsKeeper location in the city center and pick it up when you're finished.

1. Central Market

Start at the Central Market, one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. It's a great place to see local products and grab a bite before starting. If you leave your bags at Lyere, it's very close by.

2. Rambla de Méndez Núñez

From the market, head down the Rambla, one of the main thoroughfares in the center, with shops and cafes on both sides.

3. Explanada de España

At the end of the Rambla, you will reach the Explanada de España, Alicante's most famous promenade, with its wavy mosaic floor and palm trees. Walk along it at a leisurely pace while looking out at the harbor.

4. Harbor and Postiguet Beach

Continue towards the harbor and carry on to Postiguet Beach, at the foot of Mount Benacantil. If you feel like it, you can head up to the Santa Bárbara Castle from this area.

5. Santa Cruz Neighborhood

End your route in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, the most traditional corner of the old town, with white houses, colorful flower pots, and stairs leading up toward the castle. Along the way, you can see the Basilica of Santa Maria and the Co-cathedral of Saint Nicholas.

Tips for the route

  • Comfortable footwear: the old town has hills and stairs.
  • Water and sunscreen, especially in summer.
  • Time: the route takes a few hours at a leisurely pace, longer if you climb to the castle.
  • Pick up your luggage within the location's operating hours before continuing your journey.
