The Barrio de Santa Cruz 🏘️
This is the oldest neighborhood in Alicante, extending along the slope of Mount Benacantil at the foot of Santa Bárbara Castle. Its steep streets, staircases, and white facades filled with flower pots make it one of the most photogenic walks in the city. It is a pedestrian-only residential area, so it is best explored on foot at a leisurely pace.
What to see 👀
Santa Cruz Chapel
Built in the 18th century over the Tower of the Ampolla, one of the few remains of the medieval wall.
Lookout points
From the top of the neighborhood, there are views of the bay, the port, and the rooftops of the center.
Just a few steps away
The Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas and the Basilica of Saint Mary, located in the heart of the old town.
When to go 📅
The neighborhood is worth visiting any day of the year, but there are two special times:
🎉 Highlights
- Holy Week (Semana Santa): On Holy Wednesday, the Santa Cruz Brotherhood procession travels through the streets in one of the most moving moments of the Alicante Holy Week.
- May Crosses (Cruces de Mayo): At the beginning of May, streets and facades are decorated with flower-covered crosses.
