The Alicante Central Market 🏛️

It is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city center: an early 20th-century building in an eclectic style with Art Nouveau touches, opened in 1922. The grand staircase on the main facade and the corner dome, known as "la Rotonda," stand out. In the Plaza 25 de Mayo, next to the market, a memorial commemorates the victims of the bombing on May 25, 1938.

🕒 Regular opening hours

  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 to 14:30.
  • Saturdays and days before holidays, 7:00 to 15:00.
  • Closed on Sundays.
We recommend checking before you go, especially on holidays.

What to eat and where to have an aperitif 🍷

🥂

The market aperitif

Salted foods with a caña or vermouth before lunch. It is a very Alicante custom, especially on Saturday mornings.

Calle Castaños

About a 5-minute walk away, one of the city's best-known tapas streets.

☀️

Luceros and La Rambla

Very close to the market, with terraces where you can take a break.

Tips for your visit 💡

1

Go in the morning

The market closes early in the afternoon, and fewer stalls remain open towards the end.

2

Saturdays are livelier

There are also more people: another reason not to go heavily laden.

3

Leave your suitcase before entering

Pick it up when you finish lunch or your walk around the city center.

4

Combine it

With a walk through the Santa Cruz neighborhood or a trip up to the Santa Bárbara Castle.
